Yer maybe its just me, but i store my new mp3's in seperate location to my main mp3 files until i sort them and get them named properly, helps me keep a neat database. Anyhow, when i want to relocate files i standardise the tagging of, i tend to require to clear my database and rescan, as i tend to do it in blocks, this is the quickest way!
Why doesnt add/rescan detect missing files and folders and remove them from the database aswell as adding new?
add/rescan upgrade!!!

Why do you need to rescan? I also place all new tracks in a separate directory, and once all tagging is finalised I use auto-organise to relocate the files into my standardized file structure. No orphaned files are left floating in the DB. Am I misunderstanding your method / need?
If "add/rescan" also had to check for missing files, I imagine it would take a lot longer. I'd prefer to look manually via Dead Links under the Files to Edit node.

You can use Files to Edit > Dead Links, select the files and use File > Locate Moved/Missing Tracks.
Anyway as suggested the Auto-Organize Files feature is my preferred method (I too have new files separated till they have been tagged).

I agree that MM's add/update routine should be improved.
The major shortcomings I see in MM's current functionality are:
- You can't add a folder without adding its subfolders.
- You can't add single files (at least not through the add/update dialogue)
- If you want to update/rescan a single folder, you have to deselect all the other music locations first or they will get rescanned as well. Rescans are sometimes necessary as I don't use MM's auto-organize function all the time, but also move files aroung outside of MM.
- An option to remove orphaned files during the update/rescan process would be helpful. Using the "Dead links" node works, but this method can be quite pedestrian if you want to remove only files of a certain location.
So what I'd like to see in MM is:
1. An "Add folder" dialogue that lets you select folders in an explorer window and simply add them to the library. The user should be able to chosse whether to include subfolders here. This method is simple straighforard and standard amongst most media players.
2.An "Add file(s)" dialogue. that works analogue to the "Add folder" function.
3. An "Update" dialogue that lets the user choose to
- add all the new files in one or more folders
- and/or remove orphaned files
- update the id3 tags of files existing in the library.
The developers might want to have a look at the itunes-plugin "Itunes library updater" which does a great job when it comes to update features.

You can invoke a folder specific Add/Rescan by right clicking on the folder in either the Location or My Computer nodes.
