Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
Ok, I'm ready to do an overinstall as roving cowboy suggested in a PM yesterday.
Otherwise, I might miss something to backup? Or would that screw things up? Unlike you, I am not familiar with the filename jargon. (I've yet to find my playlist database files, while it was very easy to find in MusicMatch Jukebox.) I just don't want to forget anything resulting in further issues.
Using Windows 7 here with MM closed, couldn't I just go into Startup > All Programs and rename the MediaMonkey program folder to "MediaMonkey (Backup 2013-01-11)?rovingcowboy wrote:The overinstall will change the id number and allow updating,
1. Go into the program files folder for mediamonkey in there copy the folders for data, scripts, skins, (brand -if you have it).
2. Paste those copys in to another folder called backup mmonkey. . .

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
I think not - Configure shows only the single toolbar that's configurable.when I right click and go into Configure, the ONLY toolbar is the Shortcut Toobar. There should be more, shouldn't there?

For a standard installation, I think not.snowblossom wrote: couldn't I just go into Startup > All Programs and rename the MediaMonkey program folder to "MediaMonkey (Backup 2013-01-11)?
If this was (super cautious) me, I would make a second install of MediaMonkey as a /portable/ install, then in both versions of MM, Option, Geenral, Allow just one instance of MediaMonkey, uncheck. Then you can run the new alongside the old, checking that you've got all your data across intact.snowblossom wrote: Otherwise, I might miss something to backup?
When you're happy, you could
1) stick with the portable version - there are I think a only a few minor disadvantages w.r.t. OS integration.
2) uninstall the main version, reinstall the current release as s standard install, then restore all your data to it.
Note: I think it not possible/easy to transfer UI settings between installations (unless both are portable).
Good luck!

{showing my novice inexperience in these matters} How do I do a "portable" install? You mean on a USB thumb drive?chrisjj wrote: . . . I would make a second install of MediaMonkey as a /portable/ install . . .
Thanks for being super-cautious. That's me too (after being hacked and several computer crashes).
Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
Select that option during install.snowblossom wrote:How do I do a "portable" install?
{quote]How is it different than a regular install?[/quote]Well the main differences I've found are it lets you have a second install on the same machine, and some settings and addons don't work.
None I've found. There's a one-line mention in the Help: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... ediamonkey and some hacks for the problems http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... 53&nav=0,2.Is there a link with steps I can follow?p

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
So, you are suggesting I make a portable install to the same hard disk drive/desktop computer? (Isn't this just making a duplicate copy of MM?)
If so, when I install, do I select a different folder for MM to dl to? ex: MediaMonkey (Portable)

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
Yes. Neat, uh?snowblossom wrote:So, I can do a portable install to the same hard disk drive/desktop computer?
Yes. If you're on Win Vista, 7 or 8, I suggest you place this folder in My Documents.snowblossom wrote:When I install, do I select a different default folder for MM to dl to?[ex: MediaMonkey (Portable)]

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
Portable Install really doesn't install much different than the regular install. You just need to enable the Option and set the correct destination folder to install: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... lation/4.0
As for backing up an old install you can use: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... lit=backup or backup ini and DB: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=17 and if required backup scripts and skins folder.
However if you're planning to start over (to get toolbars back) I'd recommend (making the backups) to uninstall MediaMonkey, run a registry cleaner (like CCleaner) and then reinstalling MediaMonkey (a clean install may be required: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=54). I'd personally only use the old DB (to keep play history and playlists) and redo the settings (instead of reinstating old ini). You can use the old DB in a Portable Install as well.
Make sure you install the Portable Install to a non Program Files folder (due to Windows restrictions this causes problems for portable apps) and not into the existing MediaMonkey install folder.

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
Yep. The advantage of a portable install is that the monkey is kept in its own cage eg the folder you specify and no settings (as far as I'm aware) are written to the registry.snowblossom wrote:When I install, do I select a different default folder for MM to dl to? [ex: MediaMonkey (Portable)]
This allows you to have as many different versions of MM as you want.
I have MM 3 (emergency fallback) as a normal install and both 4.07 and 4.1 beta installed as portable on my pc.
Remember when you install the portable version it cannot see the settings that the original MM had so its like starting afresh.

Re: Toolbar(s) Disappeared
To jiri and chrissjj:
While researching both your suggestions, I hit a snag.
I can't find the following: CurrentUser\Software\MediaMonkey\Interface on my computer. (I assumed "CurrentUser" should be my username.) I'm using Windows 7. Could it be a slightly different filename or path? (I did a search for Interface, Software and MediaMonkey. MediaMonkey produced the program file, as expected, but no other results for the others.)
To Lowlander:
Thanks for the links and clarifications.
I dl'd trixmoto's backup script, which looked very helpful. I may have something set incorrectly, as I hit the following error while trying to backup, with username below = my personal username):
Script:
C\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\MediaMonkey\scripts\ABackup.vb
s
Line: 12
Char: 11
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Songs DB.SDBApplication' (Can't remember if there was a space between Songs and DB.)
Code: 800A01AD
Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
Any suggestions how to work around it?

Thanks, nohitter. That clarifies my query above to jiri and chrisjj as to how to find CurrentUser\Software\MediaMokey\Interface.nohitter151 wrote:http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 45#p357245
Being cautious here: Once I delete that . . .
1) Does it eventually need to be restored?
2) What results should this produce?
3) What are the resulting consequences/cons?
