Library saves

Post by s_tevep »

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and indeed, new to MM. I apologise now if this is a common question but I have not been able to find an answer by searching the forums. My question is this. Is there a setting that saves the library for the next time I use MM?

I ask this because I have a large music collection and everytime I open MM the library is empty and MM scans my harddrive for music. This takes about 20 mins which is quite frustrating. I love this program once it is up and running but this problem is tempting me back to itunes (which I detest). I'm sure it is something simple but not knowing all the terminology of the program and indeed computing in general I am struggling to find it.

Thank you in advance for any help,

Steve

Lowlander, thanks for your reply. I don't think that is the problem although I cannot be sure. I am using Windows 7 and when I followed your instructions the registry string looked like this:

C:\Users\s_tevep\AppData\Local

Slightly different from what I expected to see, but it did have my username in it. I know nothing about the registry so I don't know.

I forgot to mention, my music is on an external harddrive. This however, is always plugged in when I open MM. I don't know whether this would make a difference as it obviously always has the same volume name. Only the drive letter changes.

are you sure its not just rescanning looking for changes?

try tools > options > library > file monitor > set startup scan to disable

"just rescanning"? it probably is, however this rather long rescan and the fact that it slows down my computer quite a bit is the main reason I switched back to winamp for my music collection. it scans in mere seconds, not tens of minutes.

this is pretty important when you are trying to access new content added to the library, if it's in a folder starting with the letter Z, you might as well use windows explorer and browse to the files.

Ok, so just disable the start-up scan. Not really an issue.

Settings might improve this. You could disable the "Analyze tracks for duplicates" and change the settings to update track info for tracks already in the library under Tools > Options > Library. This will improve performance.

You can also use a separate folder for new tracks so the amount of tracks scanned is reduced. Tools > Options > Auto-Organize can even move the songs to your regular location once they get scanned in.

Thanks for all your input. In the end I just reinstalled MM and everything works fine. Must have been an installation glitch.
