Randomize Playlists

Post by nduke »

This has been brought up before, but it still hasn't worked it's way into the Monkey, so I wanted to request it again.

I would like the ability to randomize a playlist. No - not shuffle, but randomize. Before I sync a playlist or export it, I would like to be able to make it's order random. This way i don't have to deal with messing with changing the shuffle settings on my Zen Micro (have you ever gotten confused listening to an audiobook only to realize it's on shuffle? OK, maybe I'm just an idiot, but I prefer not to mess with that setting!)

The randomize palylist feature could be either a menu selection, available through scripting, or a device sync option. Any of those would make me really happy!

The current workaround that has been suggested many times is to add the playlist to the Now Playing list, choose "Randomize list" from Now Playing's edit menu, remove all tracks from the playlist (and PRAY you don't accidently click OK with remove from library and computer selected) and then send Now Playing to the playlist. Far to many steps!

Juat my 2 cents!

Autoplaylists are your best bet, the sort order can be set to 'Random' or 'Random Album'. The 'now playing' window also can be randomized, but not static playlists (not sure why you'd want to, either)

As I mentioned in my original post, this way it can be exported or synced to my mp3 player in a different order each time. For a playlist like a workout mix, or a mellow mix I'm not interested in a specific order of songs.

I am aware of that the autoplaylists allow random order. MM offers randomize an all playlists (Now Playing & Auto) EXCEPT static. I'm just asking that it be extended there as well.

Another option/feature request (this has been requested before as well) is to have an option in the autoplaylists to include other playlist. This would be a great way to have even more control over playlists, but in my situation I could have a randomized autoplaylist that only includes songs on my static playlist.

I agree with this also, MANY times I've wanted to randomize static playlists either for mp3 player export or just normal listening.

A right click on the playlist and "Randomize this playlist" option would seem to be ideal.

I know it is workaround but why don't you play playlist and randomize it in Now Playing?

Because the playlists needs to be played random on the portable device. But the portable device doesn't have a random/shuffle function?

Loading it to now playing affects the current now playing playlist, then of course shuffling the now playing playlist, either includes all previous songs that were on it, or you have to clear any remaining songs and enqueue's your pending playlist.

This makes the following situation:

Your playing songs, and your now playing list is not finished.
You want to *enqueue* a randomized set of songs from an established playlist..

- you have to add the currently not loaded playlist to the now playing list (either clear and play it, play it next, or play it last), then randomize the now playing list (which still includes all previously played now playing songs)

- your play position relative to your previous now playing list is now totally screwed up.

a specific example:

I am at song 70 of 100 songs in the now playing playlist, I want to enqueue a static playlist of my favorite soundtracks, however I want them shuffled.

I click the playlist and select play last to enqueue the soundtrack playlist, I now either have to manually remove tracks 1-70 and shuffle the entire now playing list, or wait until I the soundtrack files start playing and manually remove the previous 1-100 tracks and shuffle the remaining playlist of my favorite soundtracks.

Does this seem at all convenient?

Clear now playing before adding playlist and then randomize. I know, that's still not what you're looking for.
