The entry was empty, but in deviceSourceName there was the string mentioned above. When I started MM and looked in he config of the "device" iTunes, there was the string in CachePath, Playlist noCreate and SynciPodName. It's weird...I exported the deviceSourceName key with the string as a value und then deleted the value. No change in MM's behaviour, but the string does not appear any more in registry. When I try to import the exported string nothing changes, either, so actually I can't get the old value back into registry. I'm quite confused...

There is another problem I just detected this night. If I synchronize my library to iTunes, it puts all synchronized tracks in \Appdata\Local\Temp, and this is, with me having several thousand songs, very fast to much space for my drive C:. And the tracks added to iTunes refer to the track in Appdata, not to the original file located in D:, where my music is and where MM refers to. For example, one song in MM is, according to MM, located in D:\Musik\<artist>\and so on. If I sync it into iTunes, it's, according to iTunes, located in \Appdata\Local\Temp. Because of my drive C: being not big enough for my whole library I ticked the box "post delete converted". Now the files in "Temp" are deleted correctly, but iTunes can't, of course, locate them any more. So I cannot get the tracks into iTunes without copying them to C:, which is quite uncomfortable with about 100GB...

In iTunes, preferences->advanced, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes folder....."

I'm confused too!

On your second point there is some more explanation needed...

When converting tracks (adjusting kbps, converting to mp3 etc. then MM will present the converted file in the temp folder (setting in MM options). This is the file loaded into iTunes. Unless you do anything else these files will build up and swamp your c:. There in no alternative to this - if you convert the files then they have got to be stored somewhere.

There are several alternatives that you can take.

• Switch on iTunes' Copy Files to iTunes media folder and switch on the Plugin's 'Post Delete Converted files'.
• Switch off iTunes' Copy Files to iTunes media folder, switch off the Plugin's 'Post Delete Converted files' and assign a path to the plugin's 'Cache Path'.

The former will put the converted files wherever the iTunes' media folder is and the temp folder will have the converted files removed. The latter will put the converted files wherever the Cache Path folder is in a fixed naming convention.

I don't like iTunes' way of storing files so I always do the second one.

I don't know why it's converting anyway, I unchecked all boxes. I'm happy with the original files, and iTunes can handle them if I add them manually the original way, with iTunes. I don't want them to be converted... -.-

Okay, I discovered that all the three values named above with the weird string in them keep any other value I give to them. All they do not do is remain empty, then they get the string as a value. But I don't where this string comes from, because even when I deleted it in the registry it appears again...is it magic?

And no matter what I try, everytime with syncing it starts converting...I don't know why, the files are all MP3s and all the Converter-Boxes are unchecked. I'm getting more and more confused...

When I saw that before I thought that you had incorrectly copy/pasted. Please confirm. I'm sure that in some wierd way this must be related to your German translation.

Confirm that your files are mp3 and that the Device Profile's Auto-Conversion tab has no entries or all entries are deselected.

No, that's correct, the whole string is the value. Just in one line. But my reg-values behave very strange, they take values like they want to, it seems to me. Trying to see any pattern...any advice for the converting thing?

Okay, tested a bit, gave the three options some values. Now I start MM, the regkeys have the correct values. Then I edit the config of iTunes.dll, and insert nothing as value. Checking the registry now there are no values in the keys, just as one would expect. Now I close MM, still now values. When I restart MM, suddenly the values appear again, and the ar not the whole string mentioned above, but my own, set as first step. I don't know what this is...

According to Jiri this can occur when calling localize() with a null string. Sure enough, this text can be found in the header for the German language files.

Okay, the problem with the strings in the values seems fixed. Cannot report any errors after having deleted the whole registry folder iTunes, now the values are and remain empty. Thanks

But the other problem remains, I don't know why MM thinks it has to convert files when it adds them to iTunes. That's not necessary and I deleted all rules for Auto-Convert after unticking all the boxes took no effect. But it still converts the files...tried even to change the suppported file types, ticked all types, no change. If I can't avoid this I simply cannot use the plugin, I don't have enough space...it's quite strange, because the "converted" files are all the same than the original files, everything is the same. Bitrate, kHz, size...iTunes is configured that it doesn't copy the music to the media folder. I have no clue...

Are the files on C: or a network drive?
Doubke check the registry for any of those wierd strings.

The path to the temp files is C:\Users\Andreas\Appdata\Local\Temp, which is on my drive, not somewhere in the network. All music is stored on this netbook, MM works fine without WLAN connection. No network drives here ...

According to the log, not all the songs are converted. But you can see it yourself, here you are...debug parameter is set to 2.

The path to the temp files is C:\Users\Andreas\Appdata\Local\Temp, which is on my drive, not somewhere in the network. All music is stored on this netbook, MM works fine without WLAN connection. No network drives here ...

According to the log, not all the songs are converted. But you can see it yourself, here you are...debug parameter is set to 2.

Please confirm what value the entry sourceName has in the registry.

Yes, 38/50 were converted - is it always the same 38? I can say is that it's not my plugin that determines the convertion or not - this logic is is within the MM interface. Try and isolate which are/aren't converted - once isolated it may become obvious what the difference is.

Final option is to install the debug version of MM and really get down to some low level investigation.

Okay, sounds logical. I just discovered that this problem only occurs on my netbook, my PC has no problem with your plugin or whatever. Try to reinstall MM, and look for changes...

I can get Media Monkey to load up my library into iTunes, all tracks and playlists correct. Unfortunately any subsequent changes to playlists/ratings/counts in Media Monkey don't get copied and non of my play counts/ratings from iTunes get copied back to Media Monkey.

Approaching the problem...seems to have to do with MediaMonkey.ini or something. With my backup I get the same errors, with a fresh installation everything works fine, as far as I can see. Keeping you informed...

The only other piece of data which is persisted is the DEVICETRACKS table. This can be flushed clear with

DELETE * FROM DEVICETRACKS

Alternatively remove all items from the sync list and perform an 'empy' sync.

I managed to get it working...I just deleted my old DB and created a new one, imported all the playlists, and now syncing goes very well. No problems here. I don't know what exactly was the problem, but I have a backup of my old DB, so if I can help you with some testing I can do that. If you don't need more testing as this is no problem with your plugin, I'm doing fine with my my new DB...
