Problem with flac tags in Asian language [#8239]

Post by somy »

Hi,

I'd like to report an issue with the ID3 tags in Asian language. MM4 cannot properly display the last character even though MM3 and forrbar2000 can recognize them without any problem. I tried to manually correct all tags but the problem reoccurs when MM4 move the files to the library (auto-organize).

Screenshots of MM3 and MM4 would be useful to start debugging this.

Hi,

Sorry I have uninstalled MM3 so I cannot post the screenshot.
However, this problem can be easily reproduced:
1) Tag a flac song in Chinese in the library, and the tags should be alright in the libaray view.
2) Copy the song to another location, and brower the song from MM4.
3) The tags show some wired character now.
It seems to me that this problem occurs whenever the flac file is moved or copied to another location.

I would really like to post a screenshot of MM4, however I couldn;t find where to attach the jpg file.....

For image upload you can use some free image hosting service, like http://www.imageshack.us/
I've tried the steps with MM4 and everything seems to be ok, even the last asian character is written a read ok (browsing My Computer folder -> tag flac file -> F5 -> tag is read ok). Is it related to all asian characters and all text fields?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I did some further tests, and it seems that the issue is related to the content. Sometimes MM4 recognize all tags without any problem, and sometime it shows the wired question mark in the end of a tag as the image below shows:

The same file looks alright in the library view though:

So is this related only to some specific characters? Could you paste me some problematic? Thanks.

Hi,

Please try artist "萧敬腾" and title ends with "你" (which means you).

I've tried to tag with this artist (萧敬腾) and I cannot reproduce it. Everything is ok, the file is tagged, tag is read exactly the same way. Did you tag it with MM4? Other software reads it ok? E.g. does MediaInfo show the tag ok? It seems, your file has corrupted last character in tag, but I don't know how to reproduce it :-/

Hi,

Foobar2000 displays the tags without any problem, so I guess the issue is related to reading tags in file browsing mode.
I did some more tests today, and I found that the tags are displayed correctly in the library view but incorrect when browsing from the file system.
The image below shows the album in the library view where everything looks alright:

When I switch to file mode and browse the same files in that folder, most tags are displayed with a wired "?" in the end:

So tags in the same files are displayed differently in library view and file browsing view......

I just found that when clicking a song with bad tags in file mode, it refresh the tags for that song and everything looks OK after the refresh for that song. However when press F5, the wired characters come back again......

Hi Somy,

Thanks for all the info.

We've tried to replicate by Tagging flac tracks with Artist 萧敬腾 and title 萧敬腾你, but MM subsequently read the files without any problem.

Could it be that MediaMonkey is failing to read certain tags that have been tagged by other applications, but correctly reads tags from MediaMonkey ? Can you post a sample file that exhibits this problem (e.g. on mediafire) ?

Thanks.

Hi Rusty,

Thanks for looking into the problem.
The tags are created by Foobar2000, and I edit many of them in MM4. As the screenshots showed, MM4 can display the tags in library view without any problem, only in file mode it gives strange characters.
I have uploaded a problematic file which is available at: http://www.mediafire.com/?sgkubmphc34vhnr

BTW, could any setting in MM4 can cause the problem?

Thanks!

This file has wrong last byte of the last character in the Artist tag. I've tried Foobar2000 v1.1.7 and it seems, it writes it correctly the same way as MM4. The question is, what application corrupted this character. It seems to be this scenario:
1) file has right tags, MM4 scans them and adds to its library.
2) some application rewrites tags in the file and corrupts the last character sometimes.
3) if MM4 reads tags from the file (in My Computer), it reads corrupted character, if from library, it shows the right one, previously scanned.

Could you test it more, to find out, what application is causing this? I've tried to write these tags in MM4 many times, other testers too, and nobody reproduced this.

I put all the songs in NAS, and only MM4 can access the music, so I don't think there is any other application modifying tags.
The wired thing is, if you click the file with wrong tags in MM4 for editing, the tags are displayed correctly again. However, when refreshing (F5), the wired characters appear again. I tried to copy a file to foobar2000, and the tags are displayed correctly in foobar2000.

Pls let me know if you have any specific tests you want me to do.

One more thing, for Janpanese, I noticed this wired character sometimes displayed in the middle of a title, so I guess it is not related to the last byte which is written incorrectly by another application. See the screenshot below:

I remember everything looks alright in MM3.
