CD-R metadata

Hey MM Friends:

I just downloaded the Gold/Lifetime version for our music library, here at the radio station I am working at. So far everything is going great.

I did notice one oddity - when I am attempting to rip a CD that has been created by a local independent artist and it's on a CD-R, when I drop the CD in the disc drive and click "rip audio CD", the filenames/metadata that comes up is by some other artists - completely NOT the artist's information (??) I have manually edited the information to match what it says on the CD jacket, but I am sort of confused as to why this is happening. Is it just these indie releases that will do this from time to time? I haven't ripped any major label releases up until this point, so I don't know if this is just a glitch with these CD-R type releases. I hope it's just them, otherwise my job just got a whole lot more tedious!

If it is a locally produced CD-R, the chances that it is in the database MM (and most programs) uses to get meta-data is very slim. The database is just supplying a best guess.

Most likely the cd 'id' is being confused when it goes out to get info. This can happen on "home grown" cds. Nothing really MM can do about it.

The less known the artist, the less likely the masses of people out there will have submitted the info to a database.
You can improve the situation by submitting what you enter/edit. However, it doesn't do you a lot of good initially
when this happens and your job does indeed get much more tedious if you deal in lesser know artists.

There are some scripts that will bring in info from other sites beyond the scope of what your ripper might be set up for.
They might improve your chances of finding what you are looking for.

MediaMonkey uses FreeDB for CD lookup. This means that self-burned discs normally return no result. In this case it seems it coincidentally matches an existing Album (I occasionally see this with commercial CD's too).
