Is there a way to force MM to recognize a new drive label?

Post by hanginwithdaddo »

I recently changed the label on one of my USB drives. However, MM's tree view continues to show the old label. Is there a way to change MM to recognize the new label? I realize that MM uses the drive id when accessing files, but my daughter who also uses my computer may find this confusing. Thank you in advance!
p.s. I already tried disconnecting the drive, starting MM, going under Tools->Options->Portable Device Sync, removing the drive from the list of available devices, exiting MM, reconnecting the drive, and starting MM again. MM continues to show the old drive label.

If it is not a "portable installation":
Using Windows System> Disk Management
Assign a fixed drive letter to the USB stick
MMW 4.1.31.1919 Gold-Standardinstallation

Right click on drive in the Location node and select Properties. Here you can change the drive name.

Changing the drive letter does not help. Closing MM, changing the drive letter, and running MM again causes MM to just assign its existing drive entry to the new letter because the drive id has not changed.
What's odd is that the old label appears in the tree view on the left under "My Computer". However, if I navigate to Tools->Options->Portable Device Sync, the new label does appear. Therefore, MM is somewhat smart about refreshing its drive label for a given drive id, but not in all places.
Still looking at the "Location node" suggestion. I'm not sure where this is. I don't see a "Properties" entry in the MM tree view under "My Computer" when I right-click the drive.

Found it (the Location node). That worked!! After changing the name, I just had to restart MM for it to show up in the tree view under My Computer.
Thank you SO much!!!!

Update: For others who might not know where to find the "Location" node, go to Entire Library->:Location in the MM navigation tree view on the left. There you should see your drive listed.
