What are your opinions on the non-Material system icons?

Post by drakinite »

Hello all,

I thought I'd ask for your opinions on the system icons (minimize, restore, and close) on the Black Monkey & Monkey Groove skins. They're non-standard, and personally I've found them a bit too quirky for my taste. I would personally prefer to make them closer to the standard on Windows, which would make MM appear more native. I wanted to ask everyone's thoughts on whether they would also prefer this, or if they want to keep the current system icons.

If we do make the change, we can make an addon that brings back the current icons, for those who prefer them. What do you all say?

I uploaded many addons to MM's addon page, but not all of those were created by me. "By drakinite, Submitted by drakinite" means I made it on my own time. "By Ventis Media, Inc., Submitted by drakinite" means it may have been made by me or another MediaMonkey developer, so instead of crediting/thanking me, please thank the team. You can still ask me for support on any of our addons.

I am no fan of that skin (Black). It generally looks so pinched and space-compromised.
I like the new MM5 icons, but they look a lot less good on that skin ... eg. Tools|AutoOrganise.
Standardisation is good, but why would you stop with just the system ones? ... there a lot of unhelpful differences; eg. sleep, repeat, addRescan, Edit|Properties.
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

Nostalgia for what? .. Windows 3.0? Or the green screens of mainframes?

Surely not for MM4? ... I can't wait to kiss it goodbye.

What i would like is a dark Material Design skin, without the orange ... Orange looks old, and also has bad memories ... Google Play Music was orange .. still pissed about that ... and also that orange man who is just being bounced out of the White House :D

It was ironic, but as you mentioned yes I sometimes miss both green screen terminal ANSI BBS text and CGA CYAN/PINK graphics    fun times.

That's a good point, there are quite a few icons that are not so great. I think the higher priority would be the system icons, but there are plenty that need improving upon. Are there any others that you think need changing?

I'm a big fan of the Black Monkey skin.
In fact, it's the only one I like.

I am not having any problems with the current icons, but if there are lots of people having trouble with them, then it won't bother me if you change them.
Will it look out of place? 😕

I was suggesting that they should be standardised across skins.
Some icon versions seem better than others ... but it is subjective, and all versions are generally OK.

The icon images are to assist identification ... it is a stupid complication if someone changes skins, and sleep=clock now becomes sleep=bed ... same thing when someone is trying to assist another person via the form ... or when someone is trying to understand a help image, and the clock, or the bed, are missing from what they see on-screen

I see. I think that's a good idea. I'll check what the others think about it too.

The icons will be updated in the next build.
For those looking to keep the old icons, you can download this icon pack: https://www.mediamonkey.com/addons/brow ... eta-icons/
