Just lost an entire PC file folder because of MMW5

Post by gordol »

I've complained about this before in support tickets, but this time I am really mad. Using MMW5, I just lost an entire file folder in Windows!. The folder contained some downloaded music I was going to add to MMW in pieces, contained in zip files. I extracted one single track from one of the zips and dragged that one track into MMW.

MMW then proceeded to import the one track and delete everything else including the folder! Some items to be added later, some were not MMW destined items at all.

The contents are not in my PC's Recycle Bin. The contents are not in my OneDrive recycle bin. They are GONE.

I have MMW set to maintain its file library so that when I make changes to the metadata on tracks it will move files as needed within its own library and maintain a clean file structure. This SHOULD NOT extend to folders that are outside of the MMW library structure. MMW knows where its library files are so anything not that is outside of it.

Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

Not if the deleted items never went there in the first place.

Hi,
Not sure what exact settings you have, but I tried today for 3 hours on at least 200 folders and more than 4k of tracks and no matter what I do leftovers are still in the folder, also even I use Auto-Organize ZIP files are moved along.

I am really not sure how it is possible that MM delete half extracted ZIP file if you do it manually.

I extracted one file from a zip to the filesystem folder and then dragged that one track into MMW. MMW then deleted every file in the file folder and the folder itself.

Do you have Auto-Organize enabled? If so, did the extracted file get moved? If so, are the Zip files in that new location?

.... yes, that is where they landed.

MMW should only move the files selected and dropped into the UI, not the entire contents of the original folder, and delete the folder only if moving the selected items empties the origin location.

MediaMonkey moves associated files along with the files being moved if all media files in a folder are being moved by MediaMonkey.

And I'm saying that it's moving things that are NOT associated with the selected file(s). Only one single file was selected here and it moved everything in the source folder.

With Auto-Organize Files you have control over this, with Auto-Organize, as an automated background process, you don't as it's an automated process and most users would expect there associated files to be moved along (like Artwork, Playlists, liner notes, etc.).

If you move track off folder and select delete emptied folder then all accompany files are also moved with last file from folder to destination folder. You also get prompt to move accompany files.

Delete Emptied is on. There are no "accompanying files" here, just a collection of items that may or may not be related to the one single file being moved into MMW. There was no prompt to do anything with the other files in the source folder.

Auto-Organize does not prompt as it's designed as a background process, Auto-Organize Files does prompt.

Auto organize does not prompt but auto organize does?

I've been using MMW for over five years. I do not know the difference between these two things.

The first one runs automatically in the background on a file that's being added or edited in MediaMonkey. The latter is run manually by the user on a selection of files.
