Director Tag Linked w/ Artist Tag [#21566]

Have you considered using one of the 10 available 'Custom Tags'? I would consider one of the Custom fields first, before using the Conductor field for other than it's intended purpose.

After that, I've used (or mis-used) the Conductor field for 'Series/Box Sets' and it's sort of working for this purpose. At the time I started doing this there were only 5 Custom fields which were already in use, as was the Grouping field. With a LOT of music files collected over many years I had never used Conductor and thought it was worth a try. It's also on the main Edit screen along with the Album Titles which was a big plus. It's not ideal, but is (sort of) serving it's intended purpose, but there are some quirks. I still think a dedicated field would probably be much better? But, that could also have some quirks as audio doesn't seem to me to be as well defined as video Series or Box Sets (I don't collect video and could very well be wrong on that part)?

So, I wouldn't really recommend mis-using any of the pre-defined fields, but in your case it just might work and could be a possible alternative in the event Director and Artist are not split up into separate fields. Just give it some careful thought before using.

Since Conductor is a properly supported tag across most audio/video formats, it shouldn't get silently overwritten the way Director currently overwrites Artist — so it should be safe to use as a holding field until (if) proper Director lands. The main tradeoff is just that you'd lose Director from any "smart" filtering/grouping logic that's specifically wired to the Director field today (if any exists), and you'd need to remember it's really Director data when browsing.

For searchability in the interim, you could also consider using a Custom Field (if your MM version/tier supports it) rather than repurposing Conductor — that way it's unambiguously "Director" in the UI and doesn't collide with anyone who does use Conductor for actual classical music tagging. Might be worth asking Lowlander/rusty whether Custom Fields are indexed/searchable the same way built-in fields are, since that would make it a cleaner bridge until #21566 is implemented.
