Replace file with higher quality version, keep playlists?

Post by achkiekma »

Hello,

I am using MM6 Gold on Windows 11 and the Pro Version for Android on my phone.

I ripped many of my CDs at a time when storage was a huge issue and thus I stuck to 128 kbit/s. Now, storage would not be so much of an issue any more and playing the songs on a great sound system shows the sad difference.
I'd like to re-rip my CDs at a higher bitrate for that matter.

Q1: Which bitrate would you recommend? 256 or even 320? Or is even 192 great enough so we do not really hear a difference?
Q2: Is there a way to do that through MM that replaces the old file directly and keeps the songs in the right places in playlists without me having to add everything again manually to playlists? I am talking about more than 100 albums.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Lena

If you replace the file (an MP3 with a better MP3), then nothing needs to be done.

However, I'd recommend lossless and to go with FLAC. This is original quality. However there is no method to replace the MP3 with FLAC on Playlists other than manually replacing them on each Playlist for each file.

Thanks! Sticking to mp3, how would I go about replacing the file? Just rip with the same information? Or move the new files into the old folder and replace manually? (In the latter case, I think it would not sync to my phone in the higher quality version, would it?) Or is there a function that directly replaces instead of going the way for new files?

Either way as long as the original is replaced.

You'll need to rescan afterwards, for Sync you need to enable force resync.

Hi Lowlander,

First just wanted to say as always love MM and everything that you and the team do!

What I was wondering was if I converted the MP3 to WAV using MM, replacing original file, would it keep the metadata to stay in the playlists?
If that works, could I then switch it out for a genuine raw organic home grown WAV ( :P  ), not a converted one in the same way you described swapping MP3s here, without losing the playlist info?

I have so many I have begun upgrading one by one over the past few months. Some are in a couple of dozen playlists and so just one single track becomes very tedious, and easy to miss one or two playlist additions... I have a couple now from months ago which I just haven't had the time to get round to.

That should work, I would also suggest rescan of files so that MM Update File size and dates changes. (you can disable Metadata update on rescan just in case.

Peke, you're a diamond. Same goes for the rest of the team. I love this software to bits!!

It worked! great stuff :D

I have a feeling I tried this a very long time ago and failed, but the missing piece was to change the metadata setting.

I daredn't test it any other way, but I made sure I matched the bit and sample rate to that of the new wav I had downloaded before converting followed by the ol' switcheroo.

I have now successfully done this on around four files..maybe five? It's very late my brain isn't sure no mo'...

The first file I could only buy a wav that was over thirty seconds shorter than the mp3 I already had. Just the first file I tried, I doubt that will happen often if at all again.
So for that one off I made sure to change the "Stop time" to match the new shorter length. Synced the tags: Note it did not change the "Length" information on the file until I switched and rescanned. It is now accurate and waveform updated fine.

Everything for the playlist information on the tags transferred seemlessly.
Of course seeing as the new files were WAV, tags can be a little janky at first having to input twice maybe thrice when super unlucky.
Mainly I just have to update the album artwork (I think it was artist/title on just one file so far) after the conversion, but that's a cinch compared to the time it takes to manually add to even just two or three playlists. Scrolling through to find where it is in order, dropping it in, having to refind it as the view shifts way above the new file just dropped. So I can remove the old mp3 from the playlist. Tedious and time consuming. Not anymore! Never again. Yipeee

One of these files I had, was in at least two, or I think actually three or more dozen playlists! ¡Aye caramba! That would have taken me a verrry long time maually.. plus the fiddling faff...plus headache. Instead it was less than a minute to readd the art or retype the title/artist.

Play counters, playlists, start and stop times, all of that so far has been seemless tranferred every time. That is all that matters to me!

Love MM. Great team. Great software!

K Imma go enjoy my new wavs in amazing 32bit 96khz ASIO flawless bit perfect playback with all the lush features of MM.

Thankee,
Matt
