Networked media server works, but the service does not

Post by btekulve »

MediaMonkey 2024.2.0.3184 on Windows 11

I want to share my library on my network, and it works when MediaMonkey is open, but not when it's closed and trying to use the service. My Windows account was having logon errors with my service so I had to use option 3 on this help page.

Some things I've made sure of:
  • Checked that there was only one media server trying to run.
  • Made sure the client was allowed to connect (by connecting with MediaMonkey open)
  • Checked that the service was running.
  • I moved the database file to its own folder and configured the .ini to use it.
  • The "Users", "Authenticated Users", "SYSTEM", and "LOCAL SERVICE" users all have read and write access to the database and library folders and everything in them. I even tried that with the "Everyone" group.
  • I've tried on both a Roku device and another Windows PC, neither worked.
  • Restarted every device possible.
I'm completely out of ideas. Does the service have any logs anywhere? Those might be helpful.

Is the Service installed as the same Windows User as youˋre using MediaMonkey? This is best as the MediaMonkey and Service settings are tied to the Windows User.

I installed the service with the same user that I use MediaMonkey for, yes. I also created the database and all folders involved with that user. However, the service can't be run as my own user due to logon errors. Is there a difference between those? Who installs the service and the user the service runs with?

This really depends on version of Windows, as from what I know some versions of Windows do not allow that same user is logged twice on PC (at least that was in that past), so best solution is to use default settings, also if your tracks are on the Network shared/mounted storage it is possible that Service do not have access rights (eg. only public shared folders will be accessible).

I tested on my PC and had no issues starting service as different user, but in the past sometimes Windows refused to re login as same user twice. Never figured the pattern. Something related to security that background logged user can track GUI logged user in realtime for phishing, ... See https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... s-concepts for partial information. NOTE some features are only available in Enterprise/Server versions of Windows.

No luck. I tried starting the service as my normal user while logged into only another local account and still got "error 1069 login failure". At least the service starts when I log on as a local system user.
Clarification: The library files are in their own folder. This folder has open permissions, but it is not shared on the network.
