Library taking a long time to load

Post by FEB »

Hi,

I've asked this question before but never really got to the bottom of it.

My MediaMonkey, when opening, seems to load the library in chunks of about 400. It probably takes 30 seconds or so to finally load every song (I have about 22,000). In a way I don't mind that, seeing as it's quite a large size, but I've noticed that when switching to another node it does the same thing - or, indeed, when on the same node but inactive for about 10 minutes, it does the same again. When I mentioned this earlier I was instructed to move the database out of its C/Username/etc location to one that was less protected, and to edit the ini file. I did that, but then MM wouldn't load at all. It would seem that the list goes in to cache, which then gets cleared after a while - is that correct?

For diagnostics, I'm running Windows 7, 32 bit, 3Gb of RAM, dual-core, and I've used the maintain library function in MM. I'm using MM 3.2.0.1292, but this problem has happened on previous iterations too. I have to admit, I have a fair few addons installed (Monkey Rok, Monkey Flow, etc, etc).

Anybody have any ideas how I can cure this?

Thanks

One other thing to add, don't know if it's relevant but my MM is installed on my D drive, the database is on the system C drive.

I'm wondering whether your D:\ Drive is waking up from a sleep mode (a period of inactivity) when you're accessing it from MediaMonkey. Hard Drives can take a while to start spinning again and may seem unresponsive in tasks such as this. If this is the case, it may be possible to resolve the issue by checking the power management configuration on your Hard Drive (specifically D:\). You can check this out in the Control Panel under "Power Options".

I'm having a similar issue - until recently it was fine but now the library just won't load (at least I'm waiting for it do so now and it's been over 5 minutes).

I re-installed MM with the latest version (I'm a registered Gold user), on launch I can see the most recent playlist displayed on the right but nothing in the middle section and the status just says 'Reading tracks' but I can't play anything.

Any ideas what's happened?

Thanks

Yours, Blueski, seems differewnt. I think it's one of the addons waiting to load, or at least some sort of startup query that runs before you can access your library. Try removing any script or addon that runs on startup. You can always re-download them...

Be aware, if you start MediaMonkey and have a long Now Playing list, that this will take a while to load. The Now Playing doesn't come from the database and as such is significantly slower. Also My Computer nodes will take longer. In both cases MediaMonkey has to read the physical files which can take a while if many are displayed. Any Library node however should be faster.

If you wonder if scripts have an impact on performance you can try renaming the Scripts folder to Scriptsoff Program Files/MediaMonkey/Scripts. Now start MediaMonkey and see if you see any significant performance improvement.

Thanks for suggestions so far. Another thing I've noticed is that despite shutting down MM there's still a process running and the icon is still there in the systray. Having then relaunched MM and shut down again there are now two MM icons in the systray. Stopping the MM process in Task Manager has not worked so I've actually had to pull out the power cable three times today because the PC wouldn't shut down/restart, presumably because this process could not be ended for some reason. Very frustrating.

I think I'll uninstall and retry an earlier version.

I reckon I may have fixed it, thanks to the Scripts tip. Renaming a folder inside called SongInformation seems to have sped up the system greatly.

Scripts or plugins can cause the failure of MediaMonkey to shutdown completely. Renaming the Plugins and Scripts folder under Program Files/MediaMonkey folder is a good start (while MediaMonkey is no longer running, so after restarting the system might be the best moment). If MediaMonkey now shuts down properly it's a plugin or script that causes this failure.

I am new to MM today i work off of a external harddrive with over 100000 songs on it, I have that narrowed down to about 21000 songs. What is the correct way to load the 21000 songs to my library and how do I save them there. Do I have to load laibrary everytime I turn on MM? My system is brand new 6gb running windows 7.Please help me with my initial start up with MM.

You just use Add/Rescan Files which adds references to the tracks in the MediaMonkey library, but doesn't move the songs. MediaMonkey can work with files stored anywhere you wish it to be stored.

Once you have added tracks to the Library you can navigate it in the Library node. From there you can select which tracks you want to play. You don't need to save anything.
