[Bug] - Auto-Organize Files drops '.' [F3990]
Hi,
When you make an Auto-Organize using the <Album Artist> as a folder name, if the Album Artist is "V.A." then Media Monkey loses the last "." and makes it "V.A".
Anybody else found the same bug?
Regards,
Luís

That is not a MM bug, it is a windows bug.
Windows will silently drop the period at the end of any folder name.
For example: Run-D.M.C. or R.E.M. as folders will also drop the period.

Thats really odd if it didnt happen before..
but if you right click your desktop and make a new folder "R.E.M." you will see the last period disappear. (at least XP, duno bout vista at the moment)

Ok guys, there seems to be some confusion regarding the problem.
I did not have the problem in any previous version of Media Monkey, so this is a new "feature".
Regarding the windows thing, maybe you guys have the extensions hidden by default, so windows just shows the first text until the "."?
Try in some other windows management tool like Total Commander and check if the file name is now displayed correctly. I can create files with the name like "V.A. - Album Name\Track # - Artist - Title.mp3" without any problem, it just does not work under Media Monkey.
If i make a string like this then the "." is there, so it's definitely a MM problem. "<Album Artist>. - <Album Name>"

Luís

While hiding extensions is on by default... its only for 'Known Files', so therefor the file has to be:lmbranco wrote:Ok guys, there seems to be some confusion regarding the problem.

1). Acknowledged by Windows natively (e.g. .MP3, .WMV, .TXT, etc) or by an application (e.g. .MSZ for Monkey Skin Zip).
2). A File.
Since folders (Directories) are not files, they wouldn't fall under the option of 'Hide extension for known files.'
Windows sees the "<name>." and thinks there should be an extension following the '.', but since there is nothing Windows tosses out the last '.' as garbage or user error and leaves it at that.

I think Imbranco is talking about a different situation to everyone else.
From what I see from his example, he's not creating a folder ending in a period, but a longer folder name where the album artist name (which does end in a period) is only part of it.
eg, the full windows folder name would contain:
\"album.artist. - album name"\
but according to Imbranco, MM is dropping the period from the end of the Album Artist name. Unfortunately, I don't use MM3, so I can't comment on the problem itself.

Re: [Bug] - Auto-Organize Files
No where in this post did you indicate that V.A. was anything other than by itself, nor did you mention that anything after the period was also dropped, so what I assumed is the <album artist> was alone on the folder name.lmbranco wrote:Hi,

If you had used <album artist> - <album> instead then it would have been much clearer.
If you are using <album artist> - <album> and period and everything after it are being dropped, then yea that sounds like a really bad bug.

Re: [Bug] - Auto-Organize Files
Only dots at the end of the folder name are ignored because Windows can't manage folders like 'artist.' and always is changed to 'artist' (without dot at the end).

Ok, somehow i think the information is or was not clear enough, my fault.
So let's make an example so that everybody gets what is the error.
My current replacement string looks like this:
"d:\<Album Artist> - <Album> (<Year>)\<Track#> - <Artist> - <Title>"
So for a track with the following information we would get the error:
Album Artist: V.A.
Album: Example
Year: 2007
Track #: 1
Artists: The One
Title: The Best
Normally we should then have the following folder structure:
"d:\V.A. - Example (2007)\01 - The One - The Best.mp3"
However, due to the bug it comes up like this:
"d:\V.A - Example (2007)\01 - The One - The Best.mp3"
Notice the missing . after "V.A". This is the bug. Nothing too extreme, but it's not a windows thing as it has worked and still does with version 2.5.5 of MM. It's definitely a MM3RC2 bug! This could mean that there is a flaw in the replacement algorithm.
Hope that everybody now got the problem.

Luís

OK thanks for the extra detail and explaination, that definately looks like a bug to me.
Hopefully the team will get it figured out and fixed for the next builds.
